| Duke is one of the most reliable and heavily planted blueberry varieties in the eastern U.S., prized for its early season timing, consistent yields, and mild, crowd-pleasing flavor. It's an excellent first choice for WNC gardeners who are new to growing blueberries, combining low-maintenance habits with a dependable harvest that arrives before most other highbush varieties. Duke also has very good cold hardiness, giving it an edge during the occasional hard late freezes we see in the Franklin mountains. Self-fertile; however, they will produce a considerably higher yield when planted with another North Highbush variety that blooms at the same time. Blooms mid to late spring. |
