Native plants evolved in this part of the world (some are even plants that evolved in our WNC and North Georgia region) — which means they already know how to handle our weather, our soil, and our seasons. But the real magic is what they do for local wildlife: they don't just feed pollinators like bees and butterflies, they give them somewhere to lay eggs, raise young, and complete their life cycle. Plant a non-native ornamental plant, and a butterfly might stop by for a snack. Plant a native plant, and you might just raise the next generation.
